UGI Stresses Winter Energy Safety

11 Feb 2022

Help UGI spread the word on safe energy practices this winter.

UGI encourages customers, community organizations and others to please share the safety tips on this page, as well as the safety messages UGI regularly posts on its social media pages.

Be prepared if you lose power during winter storms

Power outages can leave you without heat in cold weather for long periods of time. Prepare before a storm hits by visiting UGI’s outage center at ugi.com/outages for preparedness tips.

Remember, in the event of an outage, never use a generator inside your home, basement, or garage, or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. UGI Electric customers experiencing a power outage or electric emergency should call UGI at 800-276-2722.

Use caution when using space heaters

Place space heaters on a level, hard surface and keep anything flammable (such as paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs) at least three feet away.

Turn off space heaters (and make sure fireplace embers are out) before leaving the room or going to bed. Using secondary heating sources, such as space heaters, can increase the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Keep vents clear

Clear any accumulation of snow or ice from the outside vents of your appliances—this allows the air flow necessary for safe appliance operation. Blocked vents can lead to a dangerous build-up of carbon monoxide inside your home.

DID YOU KNOW ACCUMULATED SNOW AND ICE CAN DAMAGE GAS METERS AND PIPES?

Clear snow from the area around your natural gas meter and other facilities, providing a path for UGI personnel who may require access. Please remove snow or ice accumulations carefully from around your gas equipment.

Keep snow blowers, snowplows and other powered equipment, which can damage natural gas facilities, away from the gas meter.
