4 Tips to Use Natural Gas Safely This Winter

Winter is a great time to enjoy the comfort and warmth of your home — from setting the perfect cozy temperature to cooking dinner on the stove, and if you’re like the majority of homes in America, chances are you’re using natural gas. However, using natural gas responsibly is important to ensure that your family and home are safe. UGI suggests following these tips to have a safe and warm winter season.  

1. Protect your natural gas meter 

• Keep your meter clear of snow using a brush, broom, or your hand. Never use a shovel or other rigid tool to clear your meter.  
• Keep your meter protected from dripping water to prevent ice buildup.  
• Do not use chemicals to melt snow on your meter. 
• If you’re shoveling snow, don’t pile it against the meter or its equipment. The snow could melt and refreeze, causing damage. 
• If your meter is hit and damaged, call UGI at 800-276-2722.  

2. Save on your natural gas bill 

• Keep all windows and doors closed. 
• Open your blinds during the day to let the natural sun heat warm your house and close them at night to insulate your home.  
• Consider lowering the temperature when you are not home and overnight.  

3. Practice general safety tips 

• Keep the area around your gas furnace or heater clear of flammable objects . 
• Make sure exhaust vents are free of any blockages. 
• Install a Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitor on each floor of your home, especially near every separate sleeping area, and replace your batteries regularly. 

4. Evacuate immediately if you smell rotten eggs 

• Natural gas is odorless, but an additive called mercaptan is used to give it a rotten egg smell to help detect leaks. 
• Evacuate the building without turning lights on or off, starting motorized vehicles, using devices like phones, flashlights, doorbells, or radios, and do not strike a match or use a lighter.  
• Move at least the length of a football field away from the location.  
• When you are in a safe and secure location, call UGI or 911.
