We Are UGI: Volunteering with Lancaster Science Factory
27 Sep 2022
UGI’s long-standing support of public education focuses on early childhood literacy, career awareness and STEM-related programs.
Recently, a group of UGI Engineers planned a volunteer outing in partnership with the Lancaster Science Factory (LSF), in Lancaster County, PA. They created several stations to explain the “Journey of Natural Gas” to children attending the event. Activity stations focused on mapping/pipeline distribution, safe digging, regulation, metering, and temperature. Each child received a “hard hat” and a bag that included information on UGI’s outreach and energy saving programs, as well as a scratch and sniff card to learn how to detect a gas leak in the home.
UGI volunteer Steven Snyder was thrilled about this project and he even built his own Rube Goldberg machine for a demonstration on pressure with the kids.
“The machine I built pumped up a balloon, which caused a chain reaction that ultimately ended with a bucket of ping pong balls being dumped on my head. We used this as a fun visual for the kids to help explain how a regulator valve works. I enjoy volunteering, and the UGI volunteer events that I’ve been to have left me appreciating how our company helps the surrounding community and feeling like I am a part of something. I particularly enjoyed this event, because it was great to see how kids were curious about the work that we do; seeing them excited and interested helps me to be excited about the work I do, too.”
UGI’s partnership with the Lancaster Science Factory includes a contribution that supports the LSF summer camp programs, which provide a variety of hands-on STEM learning experiences for children. UGI’s support also helps provide their STEM outreach programs to schools or youth-serving nonprofits that are unable to pay. In addition, UGI sponsors their annual fundraising event that allows UGI to attend the event and speak with guests about the benefits of natural gas, customer assistance, and energy saving programs.
