UGI to Power New Luzerne County Compressor Station

08 Oct 2021

The Transco interstate natural gas pipeline, which runs through eastern Pennsylvania, is nearing completion on a compressor station in Luzerne County that will be served by UGI Electric.

Operated by The Williams Companies, the Transco pipeline is the country’s largest-volume interstate natural gas pipeline system. The system is a major supplier of natural gas to the East Coast and transports a significant amount of Marcellus Shale gas into UGI’s natural gas distribution system.

The compressor station is located in Sweet Valley and required approximately $980,000 of capital improvements to UGI’s nearby electric system. Those enhancements included upgrading three miles of service lines from single-phase to three-phase electricity. In addition, 87 new poles had to be installed to accommodate the power requirements (shown at right). “This project will also improve both the service reliability and capacity for all our customers in the area,” Stacey Jackson, senior engineer, said. The natural gas supply carried by this section of the Transco pipeline is primarily drawn from Marcellus Shale wells in the Williamsport area.
