We Are UGI: Saving Lives through Donating Blood

January is National Blood Donor Month, which is the perfect time to resolve to be a regular blood donor and help save lives.

UGI has a long-standing partnership with the American Red Cross. While our partnership was originally formed on the shared value of community safety, it has evolved to employees supporting all facets of the organization’s critical work. During a recent blood drive at our Denver office, UGI Utilities employees donated 35 units of blood to the American Red Cross.

In January, the American Red Cross announced that the number of U.S. blood donors hit an all-time low in the last 20 years. Blood and platelet donations are needed to help alleviate the shortage and ensure lifesaving medical procedures proceed without delay. Additional challenges, such as winter weather and seasonal respiratory illnesses like the flu and COVID-19, are also affecting donor turnout.

According to the American Red Cross, a person needs lifesaving blood every two seconds in our country and its availability can be the difference between life and death. One blood donation can save up to three lives.

“I have always donated since I turned 18,” says UGI Utilities employee Daniel Wert, above. “A few minutes of time can make a difference for someone in a less fortunate situation. A few years ago, my sister-in-law was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and required blood transfusions. Because of the transfusions she was able to stay healthy while she went through a treatment process and found a treatment that still works today and no longer requires the transfusions.”
