Emergency Preparedness Plans

03 Nov 2023

Do your employees know what to do in the case of an emergency? UGI urges all our business customers to have an up-to-date emergency preparedness plan to ensure quick action in the case of any potential incidents, including natural gas emergencies.

What To Do If You Smell Gas

Natural gas is naturally odorless and colorless. To make natural gas detectable, a chemical known as Mercaptan is added. It has a smell that is similar to rotten eggs. Natural gas detectors are also available at most home improvement stores.

Remember, there is no charge for UGI personnel to come and investigate a natural gas odor.

Emergency preparedness plans should stress the importance of immediate evacuation and then how to promptly report a potential problem to UGI’s gas emergency line at 800-276-2722 or by calling 911 from a safe location.

Plans should also include what NOT to do if natural gas is detected, such as:

  • DO NOT use phones (standard or cellular), computers, light switches, electrical outlets or any electronic devices.
  • DO NOT operate vehicles or powered equipment where leaking gas may be present.
  • DO NOT smoke or use a lighter, match or other open flame.
  • DO NOT try to re-light a pilot light.
  • DO NOT email us or post on social media if you smell gas or suspect a natural gas leak. Call 911 or UGI’s emergency line at 800-276-2722.
  • DO NOT re-enter the building to open doors and windows. Only re-enter after the building has been thoroughly inspected by our service technician.

No emergency preparedness plan is complete without gas safety education for all employees. For more information, visit https://www.ugi.com/natural-gas-safety.
